Jacksonville inshore report April 2010

Spring has sprung and the fishing is outstanding! Warm, sunny weather has the Redfish and Trout fired up. Lot's of small shrimp, minnows and mullet have invaded the backwater creek systems here in Northeast Florida. Last week, my good friend Lee Land spent a couple days with me on the water. We found several redfish aggressively feeding around low tide. Lee sight casted and landed 3 nice fish using DOA jerk baits. I have noticed that the schools of redfish and trout are on the move more due to the increase in bait available. If I don't continue to catch fish in a spot, I will move on, following the bait. Catches of 15 or more redfish are the average each trip.

The water clarity has been best around high tide and the speckled trout have been my target on this tide phase. We are catching most trout on soft plastics on 1/8 jigs, fishing down near the bottom. Lee also caught a few oversize bull reds on Cajun thunder floats around the high tide. The highly anticipated springtime "top water" bite for big gator trout is just getting started. As the water continues to warm each day, the top water fishing is getting better and should be an awesome spring and summer.
