Fishing Report

Lake - Table Rock

4/4/10:

KimberlingCity Area: Ah Spring, the lake is changing on a daily basis as fish move from their winter haunts to the shallows of spring to spawn………. In other words, everyday is different, the fish seem to be here today and gone tomorrow. This past week in the mid lake area fish have been caught on stick baits, grubs, jigs and shaky heads. The majority of fish have started to move to secondary and main lake points adjacent to spawning pockets. Steeper points with a little wind blowing directly on them have been the best spots to throw grubs and stick baits with McSticks and Rogues accounting for most of the fish. Pausing the bait for more than a couple of seconds has been ineffective, if the fish are there they will feed. These same locations are just as effective when the wind is calm, with a Jewel Squirrel head or Spider jig; the Squirrel head has been best with a green pumpkin finesse worm and a PB&J 5/16 oz spider jig tipped with a green pumpkin Chompers jig trailer has been tough to beat.

James River: The rain over the past week has kept the current and color up in the James River. The heavier stain of the river has resulted in warmer water on sunny days, and the backs of shallow pockets have been producing some better quality fish near wood cover. Chompers McCutchen spinnerbaits fished around this shallow cover will result in quality largemouth. In log jam pockets use a Jewel Eakins Flippin Finesse jig around the heavy cover. Further down stream fish are being caught on wiggle warts and stick baits on steeper banks and points leading to spawning pockets. Work a wiggle wart parallel to rocky banks six to eight feet deep.

White River: The White river needs to be broken down into three areas right now; the confluence with James to Campbell point, Campbell point to BeaverTown and the Kings River. From the James to Campbell point; smoke or salt and pepper 4” grubs on ¼ oz heads ad stickbaits continue to be the best options, further up stream Spinnerbaits and Jewel Squirrel heads. Much like the rest of the lake fish are on the move to spawning areas, from the James to Campbell point key on steeper points adjacent to spawning pockets, stick baits and grubs on windy days are your best choice. From Campbell point on up the fish seem to be shallower and closer to moving into spawning areas, work gravel points and pockets with a Squirrel head and a Chompers McCutchen spinnerbait around wood cover in these pockets. In the Kings river, males have started to roam the shallows looking for spawning locations, pitch Eakins jigs and 3/8 Jewel football jigs around shallow wood cover in gravel pockets.

Dam Area: The lower end continues to improve everyday with warmer temperatures. On windy days key on shallow rock and gravel points directly in the wind near spawning areas with stickbaits and 4” Chompers single tail grubs. These fish are suspended but can be very shallow, several good smallmouth were caught this past week in as shallow as five feet deep. Further up Long Creek the bite is similar to the Kings river, fish are moving quickly to spawning locations and can be caught by targeting wood cover in spawning pockets and points leading into spawning pockets.

Lake – Taneycomo

4/4/10

Constant generation over the past week has made the drift bite the best option. Gold Little Cleo spoons, Panther Martin and Rooster Tail spinners have all been effective in shallows and riffle areas, stop and go or slow roll retrieves have been the most effective. Drifting Gulp Eggs, Power Bait Eggs and live night crawlers have all been very effective, mix colors of gulp or power bait and make sure to use a heavy enough weight to keep the bait close to the bottom.
