Winter winds and Bonefish tails

Honolulu - Sal****er Fishing Report

Well i'd like to thank Mike Lawson of Henry's Fork Anglers for enduring what i would call an iron man day of bonefishing with flyrod. We timed the trip so there would be the most possible water on the flat. The past weeks tide has been a real issue at many of the spots i like to wade. When i say tide i mean absolutely no water. So with that in mind, it's very hard to get a full day in. I encourage clients to do a half day and schedule it when we have the most water. Thank God for tide charts! So with very low low tides and low high tides, fish can be found finning and tailing but this is not ideal. I like to think of bonefishing for trophy fish as a numbers game with the more shots i can get you of course the higher the odds of getting that fish of a lifetime to scream 150 yards of drag at mach 1.
With higher tides and good sun the fish can be intially spotted tailing and then thier rather long and thick emeral green body can be observed
as they close within range. The higher water makes them much less spooky and more catchable.
We will be coming into these types of tides in the next few weeks so get ready!

Unfortunately with Mike, we not only had very limited sun but very limited tide even with our perfect timing. He did manage to get about 10-15 decent shots at some bruisers and some bursts of sun at the critical moments but the gusts over 30 knots made it nearly impossible with flyrod. I commend him for his valliant effort and all was not lost because at least he got to see the potential of this world class fishery. He'll be back to settle the score!
