Tsunami warnings, wind, rain and tailers

Honolulu - Sal****er Fishing Report

the theme of last week was cancellations. It started last weekend with a tsunami warning [the first one in years for hawaii] that turned into a complete dud. I guess i can't complain about losing a charter when i could have lost my place of residence. The rest of the week was heavy wind and rain. Typical winter type weather for Oahu. I did manage to get out for one day of flyfishing for bonefish. We did see many tailing fish when the tide finally came in but did not connect. In and out clouds and wind made it very tough. But the nice thing about days like that is the bonefish are not nearly as spooky. This is when practice in wind really comes in handy.
The casts aren't nearly as long as calmer days but the trick is to be prepared so the conditions don't get the best of you. Even good casters should take the time to practice with wind because regardless of what island you are going to, trade winds can pickup even on the calmest mornings.
Bonefish love choppy, windy days and seem to feed more actively!

next week i have the pleasure to fish Mike Lawson, owner of Henrys fork anglers. There will be some wind but hopefully it will start backing off and i will have much more to report!

Target Species:
