I was recently down in the Gainesville area to give a seminar at the University of Florida and was fortunate enough to get out fishing all day on 1/23/10. Although I cannot disclose the location, my report should be pertinent to other lakes in the area. We fished 7am to 7pm with large shiners chasing trophy largies. We focused on areas where males and females might begin staging for the spawn. Those areas included floating mats of vegetation, the entrances to canals, and vegetated points. Fishing was consistent all day and we ended with 8 fish. Our catch was topped by a six pounder, but we also had a couple of 3 and 4 pounders. It was a great day on the water and I imagine that fishing will only pick up from here.
