Records in October 2009

October is half way over and there are still records being broken. I love to sit talk fishing and have a cold one with just about anybody…most of the talk is about fishing records right? Well this October we are talking more about record temperatures unfortunately, however the fishing is still pretty darn good this month so the records still may fall.

In FloridaBay the past full moon and new approaching season seems to have driven the small Tarpon away from the pot holes and finger channels they were holding in for now but record temperatures and calm mornings might bring them back.

This weekend we fished the Key Morada Junior tournament out of Islamorada and I had the pleasure to fish with Morgan Bodem and her father Jeff, the day started with some small Reds and Ladyfish in the packed finger channels up near Snake Bight then we moved to an area I knew that would be holding good numbers of Snook, after 20 minutes of looking there they were nice schools of Snook most all around 27 to 29 inch size. With only a little bit of help from her dad Morgan managed to land 3 nice Snook all around 27 inches good job Morgan.  After that the bite slowed a bit with the changing of the tide and afternoon sun heating up things however we did manage to find some nice Reds in potholes but no takers.

This week we should find the large Tarpon in deep water off the west coast and some Cobias will start to show up in the usual spots with water temps starting to fall a bit.
