Tampa Bay September Fishing Report

Well fall is right around the corner. I felt it a few times in the air over the past few weeks, all with some summertime extreme heat and even a few rainy days.  Redfish have made up the bulk of my catch and have been my primary target this past month.  During the month we had some great days on some monster Reds, followed by a little lull in the Red action. Now the bite seems to be back on.  The Reds this past week have not been quite as large but we have been getting lots of action on them with some of the better days with as many as 30.  Pretty much all of them are keepers in the 22 to 25 inch range.

Snook have also been biting a little better this week than they have all month, which is generally how they are this time of year.  The snook bite will progress as we get into October.  We lost a few monsters this week that we just couldn’t put the brakes on but landed several in the 27 to 30 inch class. We also had plenty of little ones.

My Trout bite has been fair lately with a lot of action, lately we’ve had to weed through a lot of small ones to get keepers. 

Mackerel have been really thick, pretty much all you want to catch and the larger ones have been pushing 28 inches.   Mixed in the Mackerel action are some 8 to 12 pound Little Tunny, some full grown Tarpon and plenty of hungry Sharks.  They are mixed together feeding on bait balls.  One minute you are fighting a Mackerel, the next a 100 pound Tarpon.   It’s been a lot of fun and pretty much what I have been doing when the Redfish and Snook get a little slow on the flats.

Grouper is in season now as well but I haven’t been targeting them yet, mostly because I have plenty of action elsewhere. I do plan to start hitting them soon as the water begins to cool.

Well that is what I have going on as of now.  October is right around the corner and its one of my very favorite months of the year to fish.  The weather is great, the fishing is great and there is little boat pressure In October, making for an awesome time to be on the water.

 I will keep everyone posted on the Kingfish run, it won’t be long. I have already seen a few small ones.
