Fall Redfish action Tampa Bay

Little Tunny aka Bonita are one of  Captains Steven’s favorite game fish. While some may second guess its table fare nobody second guess’s its raw power. Sunday with the East winds below 10 mph it was like fishing in the back yard pool.

Getting the day started gathering bait was oh so simple. One toss of the cast net was all that was needed. White bait is thick and if you are looking for Threadfins for cut bait they to are easy pickens. Just look for the rain like dimples on the surface away . Put away your ¼” net and toss your fast sinking 3/8” in this deeper water.

With live white baits for Redfish, Trout and Mackerel we started our trip back across the ship channel to Ft. Desoto. Birds diving to the West gave away the schools of Mackerel and Bonita and we could not resist. Silver Clark spoons cast into these feeding frenzies met with hard hits and strong runs. Bonita are football shaped speed demons that test a reels drag! Once the schools dives down be patient as they will be back up soon. Just watch the birds as they are better then AAA finding schools.

The fall redfish action once again was stellar. Up in my tower it didn’t take more than 30 minutes to find a school of 50-100 over the slot reds. With 3 baits out it took all of 90 seconds for another triple header. As my angler brought a red boat side I would cast another bait and switch rod with my anglers to keep them in the action. While unhooking and reviving the red I can hear my anglers hollering and having a great time.
