Jacks and more Jacks

Saturday morning the plan was simple, find one of several big schools of large redfish roaming the Ft. Desoto area. The east winds blowing 15 mph made sight fishing a nightmare so I abandoned that plan and looked to get out of the wind.

A quick run to the eastern shoreline paid big dividends quickly. I ran smack into a large school of jacks in 3-5 pound range. It was game on for over an hour with nonstop action. While it’s not snook or redfish the rod bending action of jacks is awesome.

Trout were more challenging as the water was churned up from last week’s storms. Look for clean water and the trout will follow. I tend to move towards the Gulf after windy days. The lush grass flats near Bunces Pass are like a giant filter pulling the sediment out of the water. I found trout in 4-6’ of water as the water temperatures had dropped to 81.

Daytime temperatures start declining the end of August signaling fall is not far off. It’s time to gear up for fall; Captain Steven starts by spooling new Power Pro braided line. Take inventory of your tackle and hit your local tackle shop.
